Située entre le Kazakhstan et l'Ouzbékistan, la Mer d'Aral s'évapore inexorablement depuis les années 60, conséquence du plan soviétique pour l'irrigation des champs de coton, dont la culture intensive a provoqué un désastre écologique et climatique sans précédent. La mer intérieure a perdu 90% de sa surface initiale. L'achèvement du barrage de Kokaral en 2005 a permis le retour de la mer et du poisson dans la partie nord mais condamne définitivement la partie sud, vouée à disparaître. Entre 2008 et 2013, le photographe est allé à la rencontre des pécheurs afin de partager leur quotidien.Located between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, the Aral Sea has been evaporating inexorably since the 1960s, as a result of the Soviet plan for the irrigation of cotton fields, whose intensive cultivation has caused an unprecedented ecological and climatic disaster. The inland sea has lost 90% of its original surface. The completion of the Kokaral dam in 2005 has allowed the return of the sea and fish in the northern part but condemns definitively the southern part, doomed to disappear. Between 2008 and 2013, the photographer went to meet the fishermen to share their daily life.
